Black tie is one of the few dress codes that still means something. When it appears on an invitation, it is a specific request, not a suggestion.

For women, black tie means: a floor-length gown, a formal midi, or a cocktail dress with enough weight and intention to belong in the room.

What works

A floor-length satin gown in black, midnight navy, or a rich jewel tone. A structured midi with a dramatic neckline. An embellished cocktail dress with enough presence to read formal.

What does not work: anything that looks casual in formal lighting. This rules out most casual fabrics, short hemlines without embellishment, and anything that reads as daytime wear.

Fabric

Satin, velvet, heavy crepe, metallic fabric. These carry visual weight in a way that reads as appropriate for a formal event. Avoid anything too light or too obviously summer.

Colour

Black is always appropriate. Midnight navy reads as slightly more interesting. Deep emerald, burgundy, and rich jewel tones all work. Metallics, gold and silver in particular, are a strong black-tie choice.

Accessories

Fine jewellery, a small evening bag, a delicate heel. At black tie, accessories should be formal. Heels are standard: strappy sandals, pointed court shoes, or block-heeled mules with enough elevation.
